COMMISSIONING A BESPOKE PRINT - STEP BY STEP PROCESS
WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS
All bespoke prints start life as original watercolour & pencil drawings, mostly of birds, animals and the natural world. I will arrange the composition to fit with the maps or other imagery I am using for the piece. The drawings are all made in my home studio, in Portobello, Edinburgh.
STORY TELLING
I enjoy the storytelling possibilities of the prints, and am always happy to discuss ideas that would make the drawing and subjects personal and meaningful. That might be by the choice of birds or animals, or how they are composed. Or I can make choices for the print for you, depending on what I think will work well with the maps and other imagery.
MAPS AND COLLAGE ELEMENTS
All the maps that I use are original British Ordnance Surveys from the 1930's - 60's ( mostly One Inch Maps, & Seventh Series) that I have collected over the years. You can specify the map location(s), but please be aware that as the maps are old, areas might have changed over time.
MAKING THE PRINT
I combine the original drawing and map(s) digitally to make the image for the print. I make adjustments to the opacity of the drawing so that small areas of the map or other imagery 'shine through'.
Once this is complete I will email you a proof to approve before it is printed. I can make changes to it at this stage.
PRINTING
The piece is produced as a one off Fine Art Giclee print, printed on Hahnemühle German Etching paper 310gsm, a heavyweight etching paper with a unique velvety surface, and a beautiful finish to the colour and detail.
All my work is printed in the UK by the multi award winning Dstudio Fine Art Print Studio. Visit their website here
